The Pennsylvania Beef Council’s Beef & Veal in the Classroom program provides grants to Family and Consumer Science educators for hands-on culinary lessons.

Bedford – Beef and veal have been popular this past year within middle and high school culinary classrooms across the state. For its eleventh year, the Pennsylvania Beef Council (PBC) with numerous industry partners, including Cargill Wyalusing, JBS Souderton, Happy Valley Meat Company, Formula 1 Feeds, Catelli Brothers, and Marcho Veal provided beef and veal grants to 45 Family and Consumer Science educators during the 2023-2024 school year with over 5,500 students benefitting from the grant program. Educators participating in the program were creative in executing their lessons, extending beef and veal resources to their students in a variety of ways.

Kylene Owen, Family and Consumer Science Educator at Lakeland Jr./Sr. High School in Scott Twp, PA shared,

"The generosity of this grant allows me to stretch my food budget and I can utilize the Ground Veal in so many different recipes with my students from taco lasagna to homemade meatballs. The ease of storage with it arriving frozen and vacuum sealed allows me to utilize it at various times throughout the school year."

This speaks volumes to the impact the program has on educators’ ability to provide meaningful hands-on experiences in the classroom.   Loretta Miller, Family and Consumer Science Educator at Central Cambria Middle School in Ebensburg, PA shared,

"The hands-on experience has been noted as a confidence booster with students feeling more capable in the kitchen and eager to try new dishes at home. They enjoy the collaborative nature of cooking classes, where they can share ideas and learn from each other. Additionally, students appreciate the practical knowledge gained about cooking with beef, which they believe will be beneficial for their futures."

The PBC is launching the Beef & Veal in the Classroom program for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year with support from numerous industry partners, including Cargill Wyalusing, JBS Souderton, Happy Valley Meat Company, Formula 1 Feeds, Catelli Brothers, and Marcho Veal. Each year, Family and Consumer Science classrooms are selected to participate in the Beef & Veal in the Classroom program. Teachers are either offered reimbursement for beef purchases or veal products delivered to their school for in-classroom lessons.
